Model United Nations (MUN) Guide for
Al Moktashef International Schools

MISMUN 24-25

Introduction

Welcome to the MUN Guide for Al Moktashef International Schools! Aligned with our slogan “Ready for Tomorrow,” this guide provides essential insights into MUN conferences, helping you excel and engage meaningfully.

MUN is an educational simulation where students role-play as delegates from different countries, debating and negotiating global issues. It fosters critical thinking, public speaking, and diplomacy.

Preparation

Research: Understand your country’s policies and the issues on the agenda. Use reliable sources for comprehensive information.

Position Paper: Draft a brief outlining your country’s stance on the topics to be discussed, demonstrating your understanding and perspective.

Conference Structure

Opening Ceremony: Kicks off the conference with speeches from dignitaries.

Committee Sessions: Delegates debate agenda items, propose solutions, and draft resolutions.

Voting Procedure: Resolutions require majority support to pass.

 What is a Resolution?

A resolution is a formal document that outlines a proposed solution to a specific issue discussed during the conference. It typically includes:

Heading: The committee name, topic, and the sponsoring countries.

Preamble: States the issue and provides context, using phrases like “Recognizing,” “Affirming,” or “Noting.”

Operative Clauses: These are actionable recommendations that delegates propose. Each clause should be clear and concise, starting with verbs like “Encourages,” “Requests,” or “Calls for.”

Importance of Resolutions:

Resolutions are crucial because they encapsulate the committee’s collective decision-making and set a course of action for the global community.

  1.  Delegates: Represent countries and articulate their policies.
  2.  Chairpersons: Facilitate discussions and ensure adherence to rules.
  3.  Observers: Attend sessions but do not participate in debates.

To maintain professionalism and respect for the conference environment, delegates are expected to adhere to the following dress code:

For Boys:

  • Dark suit or blazer
  • Dress shirt (preferably white or light-colored)
  • Tie
  • Dress shoes

 For Girls:

  • Abaya, suit, or blazer
  •  Blouse or dress shirt
  •  Closed-toe shoes (flats or heels)
  • Avoid overly casual attire (e.g., jeans, t-shirts, sneakers).
  • Aim for polished and neat appearance to convey professionalism.

1. Public Speaking

Practice clear and confident delivery. Engage your audience with strong body language.

2. Negotiation

Collaborate with other delegates to build consensus and achieve shared objectives.

3. Critical Thinking

Analyze issues from multiple angles, developing well-reasoned arguments.

MUN conferences often recognize outstanding delegates through various awards, which may include:

  •  Best Delegate: Awarded to the top-performing delegate who demonstrates exceptional negotiation, public speaking, and resolution drafting skills.
  • Outstanding Delegate: Recognizes a delegate who significantly contributes to the committee’s work but may not be the overall best.
  •  Honorable Mention: Acknowledges delegates who show promise and actively participate.
  • Best Position Paper: Given for the most insightful and well-researched position paper in the committee
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with current events and international relations.
  • Engage Actively: Participate in discussions and respect differing viewpoints.
  • Network: Build relationships with other delegates for future collaboration.

Participating in MUN not only enhances your understanding of global issues but also prepares you for future challenges. Embrace this experience, and remember: we are all “Ready for Tomorrow.”

Good luck, and may your MISMUN journey be rewarding and enlightening!
